Charlotte’s New Teen Curfew

Charlotte teens are facing a new law of a 10 P.M curfew. The City Council voted on September 28, 2026, to set this new curfew. The Curfew will begin on November 1, 2026.

This new law states that people under 18 must be off public streets and spaces. The curfew is supposed to address safety concerns involving large groups of teenagers.

“We’re trying to prevent victimization of our young people, and we’re also trying to prevent them from victimizing others,” Police Chief Estella Patterson said. “We understand that a pilot gives us the opportunity to explore that.”

Charlotte had a previous curfew that has been in place since 1995. It set different times for different ages. Kids 12 and under were not allowed outside past 10 p.m., while curfew started at 11 p.m. for teens ages 13 through 17.

“The idea is not to look for young people who are out at 10 p.m. and say, just because you’re young or look young, we’re going to stop you,” Charlotte City Council Member J.D. Mazuera Arias said.

Now there will only be one curfew time for everybody under 18, and it will run from 10 p.m. through 6 a.m.

Exceptions still apply. Minors can remain out during curfew hours if they are accompanied by a parent or authorized adult or if they are traveling home from work, if there’s an emergency or simply running an errand for a parent. Teens are also still allowed out after 10 if it’s school-related, sport-related, work, or religious reasons.

Other local towns also have a teen curfew, like Rock Hill, Fort Mill, Lake Wylie, and Clover. Fort Mill, Lake Wylie, and Clover don’t currently enforce their law. Rock Hill’s law runs from Sunday–Thursday from 11:00 PM to 6:00 AM, and Friday–Saturday from midnight to 6:00 AM.
